Types of summer camp swimming roles

Lifeguard Roles
Safety is vital to all waterfront camps, which is where the lifeguard role comes in. If you’re a confident swimmer and have an interest in lifeguarding qualifications, this role is perfect for you. Better yet, all on-site training will be provided at no cost to you! This is a role for people who love responsibility and being seen as the hero, with the swimming skills to back it all up.

Fishing Guides
Fishing is actually a really popular activity at camp. Kids are introduced to the basics of casting, rod rigging, lure selection and how to target individual species. This camp role offers a genuinely unique opportunity to make an impact on the campers who choose your activity.

Watersports Camp Instructor
Instead of paying hundreds to take part in windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing and more - why not get paid to do it? Don’t get us wrong, it’s not all fun and games. However, if you love watersports and want to share that passion with others, this will be the perfect role for you.

The benefits of summer camp swimming counsellors
The heat beating down on your skin. Laughter all around you. The clear blue of water everywhere you look. It’s no surprise that nothing says ‘summer’ like a summer camp in the USA. It’s not just about having a good time in the sun, though. Don’t get us wrong, that’s a huge part of why people love summer camps, but there are plenty of other benefits:
- Build your confidence while building others
- Learn how to teach and manage people, which can be key to future career roles
- Receive extensive, valuable training before the children even arrive
- Spend time in the water, a great way to stay healthy
- Earn money, with salaries starting at $2,000
- Make friends and memories that last a lifetime (trust us, we’re responsible for a few marriages!)

Summer camp counsellor roles are in high demand, particularly for aquatic positions. Being a confident swimmer will be essential, and experience working as a lifeguard previously could make your application really stand out. However, don’t worry if you don’t have that experience. The great thing about these roles is that you’ll learn a lot through the on-site training. Just bring the right attitude, and in most cases, we can take care of the rest!
While it is desirable to hold a current lifeguard qualification from either the American Red Cross or NPLQ, this isn’t essential. Many camps actually offer training courses to help you get those qualifications.
The activities available at waterfront camps in America will vary from location to location. Still, they could include anything from knee boarding, board diving, fishing, windsurfing, ski boating, water skiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, tubing, banana boating, and much more.
Responsibility and being able to manage people are two things that can be key to a successful career, in and out of the water. Yes, working as a camp lifeguard opens up roles as a pool supervisor or manager, but the lessons it will teach you can apply to almost any role. Teaching and coaching roles in particular are fairly common for people with lifeguard experience!
