How To Know Whether Or Not Summer Camp Counselling Is Right For You

Have you ever thought about becoming a summer camp counsellor but were unsure whether or not it was for you or did not know where to start? You are not alone.

So many people have the initial interest in becoming camp counsellors across America but are put off because they don’t know whether they can or whether they would enjoy it. A lot of people are also put off by not knowing where to start.

Being unsure could be holding you back from enjoying the summer of a lifetime, participating in amazing adventures and making memories that will last a lifetime.

In this article, we will look at everything that you could want to know to determine whether or not summer camp counselling across America is right for you.

What Do Summer Camp Counsellors Do?

The role of a summer camp counsellor is a very busy, yet very rewarding one. Camp counsellors are responsible for all of the campers. They therefore have to make sure that the campers are forming strong relationships with each other and have to deal with issues such as homesickness, and bullying.

In addition to this, counsellors are also in charge of activities. They must organise them, run them and also help campers during their daily activities. All while ensuring that they are having the time of their lives.

While the job can be very fast-paced and hectic at times, it is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the campers having fun while making memories that they will never forget truly is awe-inspiring.

Do Camp Counsellors Get Any Free Time

Yes, of course, counsellors get a lot of free time where they can enjoy the beauty of camp life themselves. Free time in camp is one of the most amazing times, not just because theycan switch off from work but they can also meet so many like-minded individuals from different areas of the globe with incredibly interesting stories.

Counsellors also get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the amazing camp traditions that make American summer camps so iconic. Whether they are sitting around a fire making smores, singing campfire songs, or just relaxing by the stunning lakes, they truly are experiences that will never be forgotten.

What Are The Requirements For Becoming A Camp Counsellor?

To become a summer camp counsellor there are a few requirements that must be met. These are very general requirements that are put in place to ensure that the safety of campers and staff is a number one priority.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to obtain a United States K1 visa for entry to the country (read our blog on everything you need to know about the K1 Visa before applying)
  • Must complete and pass all police checks in the United Kingdom to protect our campers.
  • Must be able to submit a medical form that has been completed by a doctor that states they are fit and healthy enough to spend a summer at camp.

What Are The Key Qualities Of A Good Camp Counsellor?

There are so many different qualities that add up to make an amazing camp counsellor. Counsellors have to deal with a lot of different situations and therefore have to have qualities that allow them to face the situations and challenges head-on and find ways of solving them. The key qualities of a camp counsellor are:

Empathy Counsellors will be looking after young campers a lot and there is no doubt that at times they could become overwhelmed or upset. Having counsellors who are empathetic and sympathetic to the feelings of the campers is hugely important to cheering them up and helping them have the best possible time.

Patience – When working with campers, counsellors may experience situations where patience comes in extremely handy. Patience is one of the most important qualities for a counsellor as the job is very fast-paced and chaotic at times. Therefore being able to show patience and embrace the madness is a quality that can make an amazing summer camp counsellor.

Leader – As a camp counsellor you have to take the lead of a group of campers as well as take the lead of a huge amount of activities. Leadership is therefore a hugely important quality that can differentiate a good counsellor from a great one. In addition to this, these leadership qualities will help to ensure that all campers are having the best possible time during activities and in day-to-day camp life.

Enthusiasm – Summer camp is supposed to be a fun place to be for the campers. Therefore having fun-loving and enthusiastic counsellors is hugely important. Campers look up to counsellors, so if they see them having fun then they will also have fun. However, if they see counsellors who look like they do not want to be there then it could potentially ruin their fun.

Creativity – Creativity is another hugely important quality. It is the job of the counsellors to keep the campers entertained at all times. Therefore, creativity can be an invaluable skill as they have to consistently come up with new and fresh ideas that help to keep campers entertained.

Who Should Not Become A Camp Counsellor

Similarly to the traits that can make an individual a great summer camp counsellor, there are also traits that people may have that may mean the job is not for them. As we have stated before, camp life can be very challenging at times. If you believe that these are traits that you have, then maybe summer camp counselling is not for you.

  • If they are a negative person
  • If they do not want to help people have the summer of their lives
  • If they are easily agitated or annoyed
  • If they do not have any patience
  • If they cannot commit to the entire summer
