Cabin Counsellor Jobs
Well, let’s clear a few things up first. EVERYONE on an American summer camp’s staff is a cabin counsellor, it’s just that most international staff also spend part of their day instructing a specific sport or skill. No matter what position you hold, you will still be living in a bunk with kids of an age you are comfortable working with. You will go to bed and wake up in the same cabin as your little darlings every day. Summer camp is all about the children.
This is a video from James who worked as a general cabin councillor in America for the youngest boys. You will notice that both he and Kate both look very tired, that’s because this is one of the toughest (though rewarding) jobs on camp.
THIS IS ALSO THE HARDEST POSITION TO BE PLACED IN.

Those of you who are hired as a general counsellor, cabin staff, camp counsellor USA, general staff, cabin specialists etc have landed one of the hardest positions on camp. You are expected to participate in every activity your kids are signed up for and it is your responsibility to get your kids to meals times and their assigned activity periods on time. Whilst you will still be supported by other staff in the bunk, you will be the person the campers come to first. You are their summer mother or father, big sister or big brother.
Most camps will not consider you for a G.C. role unless you have extensive experience with children, are at least 20 years of age and have an additional skill to bring the camps community. The more you have to offer, the better your chances.
To the campers however - you are a legend! One such legend is Kate, have a listen to her views on being a girls camp staff memeber.

This role commands a lot from you, and the real test will be for you not to exhaust yourself in the first two weeks. Pace yourself - it is a long summer. It is also important to point out that you will be expected to support the activity instructors when your group arrives. You are expected to participate and set the example your campers need to follow.
If you are around 22 or older then it might be worth considering a position on camp that comes with a little more responsibility. Have a listen to what Dave has to say about being a “group leader” it gives you a good understanding of what is expected of you on camp. Make sure you let us know if you think you have the experience for this more senior of roles, if not, Dave’s video gives you a good idea of what your group leaders will expect from you.

The more active and enthusiastic you can appear, the better your chances, so make sure you tell us all about everything you enjoy doing. This is a very competative area to apply for. We will encourage you to add as many strings to your bow as we have time to help you achive , before the summer camp starts.
If you make an excellent effort and we think we can help you, we will discuss your options and once we are all on the same page, we will get you chatting with actual camp owners. We will also require that you pay the first £100 of your program fees to show us and the camp that you are serious about the program. We call this your “Evidence of Intent”. (This amount is fully refundable so long we have not introduced you to a camp).
The camp director will get in touch and assuming you make a great impression, fingers crossed they will offer you a position for the summer.
On receipt of your contract and assuming you are happy with what you have been offered, we will start your visa application.
We have no registration fees and we will not encourage you in any particular direction unless we feel there is a really strong chance of you being successful.
Our total program fees are just £365 and you only need to pay these once you are placed at a camp. The program fee covers your visa forms, your medical insurance, help and support in the UK, and of course a 24hr help line while you are in America should you ever get stuck.
