Summer Camp Jobs

A “summer camp job in America” is a very broad term.

The easiest way to picture what a summer camp and a summer camp job is like is to imagine it as a small, active, community that opens only for a few months every year and every year, needs to find new adults to run the village.

Some of the village elders return every summer and some of the general village population return but the majority of all the summer camp staff needed to open and support the community, don’t come back. Camps then have to find new staff to fill their new summer camp jobs.

Everyone on camp is there for the children, irrelevant of your actual title. The only people who do not live with the children in the bunks are the head staff and the support staff.  In the main, all camp councillor instructors are sleeping in the bunks with the children and assisting the general camp councillors with the morning and evening tasks.

In positions such as climbing or adventure instructor, waterfront staff, when the weather closes in, these camps areas cannot run. During these times, all camp instructors then go back to the cabins and essentially become general councillors.(The camper's idol!)

Have a quick watch of the video with James describing his experience of being a summer camp counsellor.
